The Most Wonderful Christmas
Gift in the World!

One of our favorite things to do for the holidays was to shop for the Most Wonderful Christmas Gift in the World for one another and then give it to each other on Christmas morning. It was always something funny and could not cost more than ten dollars. I think your favorite of all time was the key chain with a private message on it. You used it and carried it with you everyday along with your lucky silver dollar. I still cherish the set of miniature frogs you gave to me. One of them is sitting on the desk next to me as I write. This is just one of my favorite memories of sharing the holidays with you and one that will remain with me always. We remained children at heart all the time we shared together, but most especially at Christmas time. We laughed so hard we cried! I wish everyone could have such a grand time and share such sweet, simple memories with one another.

I'm sending you your Most Wonderful Christmas Gift in the World... I hope it makes you laugh again and again. All my love, Belle Anne

Veteran's Day—November 11, 2008

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 the Armistice was signed. The fighting of the war that ended all wars, World War I, had ended. Armistice Day was created to remember the fighting had stopped and to embrace the peace. This was the advent of the United States celebrating Veteran's Day on November 11th, in honor of all of our military members who have served our nation in war and peace.

Our tradition from 1997-2003 was to visit Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas and then from 2004-2006 at Punchbowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. We always took a couple of beers and leis to place on the graves or at the Memorial Wall for those missing in action from the Viet Nam war. It was a sad time remembering those who fought along side of you who will forever remain twenty-six years old. You were proud of their service and never forgot them. I will keep our tradition alive and continue to honor you and your buddies on this day.

Today, once again, we salute our military members for their service to protect our country and our freedom. We also thank their families for the many sacrifices they make while their loved ones serve our country.

Do you remember our first Halloween?

I remember it clearly... our first Halloween in our new home in San Antonio. We were looking forward to all the children coming to our house and passing out the treats I made for them. To our dismay very few came around - we had so much left over and it was still early... so we began to talk story about earlier Halloweens.

This was a story I shared with you. When I was in the 2nd grade during our Halloween Festival at school I was voted the princess of the class. Yes, there was a prince as well. Both of us were responsible for raising funds for our school. Aunt Nita was so popular and knew so many people. She took me around to many places including the apartment house she and Uncle Bob owned and helped me collect coins from everyone. I thought this was a teriffic idea! I mean it was like manna from Heaven... So I smiled, collected the coins AND then went back to everyone saying how poor we were and we needed money just to eat and pay our rent (there's another story connected to this your mom may remember). Of course, they gave me MORE coins. My class won the fundraising competition for our school, but I got in trouble after the fact because the tenants in the apartment house told Aunt Nita what I had done. I had to apologize to everyone and return their money, but no one would take it back! Everyone laughed  and said as long as my school received the money it was worth it. The bottom-line was that my bottom stung a long time after!!!

What a beautiful day to celebrate the first anniversary of your flight into a world of joy!

I took my kayak to Lake Grapevine near Flower Mound, Texas armed with a couple of your favorite things—Shiner Bock beer and a hot dog plus rose petals to scatter across the water. This was a venture for two this year... just your spirit and me on the lake. We talked quite awhile, not just about us, but about others needing your and God's help...

  • Jack S. in SA
  • John J. in hospital in Baltimore, MD
  • Bud C. in hospital in Little Rock, AR
  • And so many others

Just before sunset a Great Blue Heron flew up on the shore very close to me. He looked straight at me for quite awhile, then turned to greet another heron that flew up beside him. The two herons stood close to one another for a few moments and then took off across the water together... flying into the sunset. I thought my heart would leap out of my chest. It was glorious to behold—

Thank you for being with me every day and every minute!

After drinking the beer, eating a bite of the hot dog and sharing the rest with the fishes it was time for your toast..."Cheers my Love—well done!"

Pineapples...

You weren't a big fan of pineapples even though you loved just about everything else about Hawaii. You liked them OK if we grilled them, but that was about it. However, you enjoyed looking at the pineapple fields growing all the way up to the base of the Waianae Mountains whenever we drove to Schofield Barracks to buy groceries at the commissary. Along the way you would tell me stories about the plantation workers and their families that worked the fields... how difficult it was to propagate the pineapple cuttings, planting them and finally picking them. You would say, "they are prickley suckers!"

We went to the Kunia Orchid Show—it was the first time I saw Huli Huli Chicken being roasted over the crazy whirling bar-b-que grills! You were so patient while I shot photo after photo of all the orchids.

Then we took in the Ikegami exhibit, Japanese flower arrangements. Of course, I had to take more photos. I was like a kid in the proverbial candy store, but after a while even your patience wore thin. So I took you home and drove right back because I was afraid I would miss something.

When I returned we had Huly Huly chicken and grilled pineapple for dinner. Later I showed you the digital pictures of the orchids and some pineapples... you though they were pretty good. I always loved you, yet days such as this I loved you even more.

Our Honeymoon in Pocatello, Idaho

Whenever I think about our honeymoon in Pocatello, Idaho I laugh out loud (LOL)! Actually it wasn't our honeymoon, but you called it that because you needed to add levity to the situation—it was a running joke between us because you didn't like Pocatello.  It was a small, dry town in the middle of nowhere and there wasn't much to do there...a big let down after two exciting years in Germany.

We were there to attend the 25th reunion of the Scotch Guard, the young women's drill team, you coached while teaching ROTC and studying for your MBA. You were very proud of them. They were champions! And how those girls loved you! I met so many of them, listened to their stories and learned so much about their lives since their days at the university.

It was in October - so cold and snowing when we arrived. You took me to your favorite haunts and showed me where you lived all the while telling me stories about your experiences there. We went to the Homecoming football game—they were trample. Then we decided to take a short trip to see "The Potato Exhibition"... I was looking forward to that only to be disappointed because it was closed for the season! The next day we watched the parade downtown which was fun... at least I enjoyed it, but you weren't impressed.

Once the festivities concluded we hopped on the plane and returned to San Antonio. While we were away there was an enormous storm which caused a terrible flood. The river broke out of it's banks damaging countless homes and other property. Our pool overflowed, but we didn't have any damage to our home. Every October we celebrated our honeymoon in Pocatello!

In memory of all who died on September 11, 2001
and all those who have followed
since that tragic day.

Today we remember the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

It's as though it happened just yesterday. We returned home a few days before from Washington D.C. from Jeanne and Ray's wedding. We were so happy for them! Then tragedy struck.

We were as astounded and shocked as everyone in the nation to witness the destruction of the Twin Towers, part of the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania. We talked about it for hours that day and for many days and years after.

I remember your profound sadness and your willingness to do whatever you could to fight the war on terror. You were ready to serve your country again. I knew if you were called you would be gone in a flash. As much as I did not want you to go (for purely selfish reasons), I knew nothing would stop you if given the chance. Because I loved you I supported you in your desire, yet was relieved when you didn't go. Our world is a better place because of you and people like you who are willing to serve and protect us when we are in harm's way.

How you loved Hawaii!

Living there brought you great joy. I am so happy that we were able to live there together even though it wasn't as long as we wanted it to be.

The days you would return early from work and ask if I'd like to "go beach" were delightful days. It was wonderful to share such relaxing times together... to walk along the beach, have a glass of wine and watch the sunset. You always smiled while we were there and I never wanted to leave.

Every Monday through Friday...

When I left our house every morning on my way to work I looked forward to returning to you at the end of the day. You always had a joke to share and a story to tell. Your jokes were the BEST! You had a special talent for telling jokes and stories... we laughed and smiled so much. No matter what else might occur that day I knew I could count on you to bring a smile to my face. How I miss you and the time we shared together. I love you.

One of my most vivid memories of Uncle Bruce, is actually strange.  I can remember staying with Aunt Judy and everyone listening to a tape of him on an old reel to reel recorder that he had sent over.  Years later I can remember that tape recorder had moved with us from house to house.
